Move over logic which isn't specific to the article
implementation of VE (e.g. nothing related to loading/saving).
Refactors setupSurface to use an abstract tracking method (which
does nothing by default), and moves surface CSS classes to #createSurface.
Breaking change:
* Rename onSurfaceReady to surfaceReady. We shouldn't need to listen
to our own events.
* Rename onReady to documentReady. onReady is not a listener.

VisualEditor is usually not enabled in talk namespaces... but
sometimes it is. And when users see the button to edit with VE,
they're going to click it and expect to be able to sign their posts.
This tool is only loaded on talk pages and pages in additional
namespaces defined in $wgExtraSignatureNamespaces.
Code adapted with small tweaks from my own gadget
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Matma_Rex/visualeditor-signature.js?oldid=13461327>,
which is already available under the MIT license.
Changes include:
* The tool is now always visible if the wiki allows signatures in any
VE namespaces, but disabled when not allowed in the current namespace.
* Register '~~~~' sequence to insert the signature.
* Code style tweaks for stricter lint checks in this repository.
* Documentation corrections.

Work around RESTBase problem that causes errors if we try to switch to
VE when the wikitext is empty. This would prevent non-power-users from
opening VE entirely.
This only solves the issue for new empty pages, and not when the user
intentionally empties the edit box. In that case, though, they get a
dialog where they can choose to "keep" or "discard" changes, and
discarding lets you open the editor.

The error code has changed after T115258 and is now consistently
'titleblacklist-forbidden' for all TitleBlacklist errors.
The API now also provides information about the exact error message to

we're not trying to display it. Maybe when we can load it (T40280).

Collapsible relates to the Vector menu behaviour where an item
is moved into the dropdown menu if the window is narrow.
This should only apply to the secondary tab when there are two tabs.

this tab should not be collapsible.

.set() should not overwrite existing deferreds; instead,
it should resolve the existing deferred if it's pending.
This is necessary because .set() is used by processResult().
Without this, passing .get() a title that no information
is known for results in a promise that is never resolved,
because the associated deferred is overwritten as soon
as the API response arrives.
Still make .set() a no-op if data has already been set,
by checking if the deferred is pending. For .resolve() this
doesn't matter, but for modifying this.cacheValues it does.

The toolbar.destroy() call that was added in 5c38995bd9 was
needed to destroy the dummy toolbar when tearing down VE
before a surface had been intialized. But when tearing down
VE after the surface had been initialized (e.g. exiting using
the Read tab), we would do:
* setTimeout in tearDownToolbar()
** Set toolbar height to 0 and wait for transitionend
*** toolbar.destroy() once transition complete
* toolbar.destroy() in cancel()
This meant that we'd listen for a transitionend event
on an unattached element (because once the setTimeout runs,
the toolbar has already been destroyed by the second call),
which of course never fires, so we'd never resolve the
tearDownToolbar deferred and never finish tearing down VE.

The activation timing was always a bit of a lie even pre-TargetLoader,
because the timer only started when the first RL request for VE
modules had loaded. But at least the process it covered was consistent,
which is no longer true with TargetLoader. Now that we start the
request for the HTML together with the RL request, the activation
time might include some, all or none of the HTML request depending
on how fast the RL request was.
This change makes the activation timings more useful by measuring
from the moment the user clicks "edit" to the moment the editor
is done loading, which is what actually matters.
* Moved start of activation timing to VPT init
** For mobile this falls back to when mw.Target#load is called;
we'll have to fix that in MobileFrontend later
* Moved end of activation timing out of TargetEvents#onSurfaceReady
into individual onSurfaceReady handlers
** This is necessary because VPT's onSurfaceReady does quite a lot,
and we want to include the time that takes in our measurements

Per Timo, this avoids us having pointless code that is never

When we moved to mw.Api, edit conflict errors stopped going via onSave and
started going to onSaveError instead. So the case to check for them in onSave
would not have worked - instead, they would go through onSaveError and get
picked up by our unknown error code, which just picks out error.info and shows
it, instead of showing our edit conflict screen.
Also return in a couple of other error cases where we probably should've been

Bug: T90372
Change-Id: I828b8474e5a76b3d0d7d08735b4d865c29d2f820
This introduces TargetLoader, which manages plugins and RL modules
in a slightly more generic fashion so that Targets themselves don't
have to. This allows us to load all RL modules in one load.php
request, rather than first loading ViewPageTarget which then
loads the other modules.
TargetLoader loads in the bottom queue, so it will be loaded
as part of the main load.php request, but in VPT.init.js we
still have to wait for it with using() because it might not
have arrived yet. This also degrades gracefully on cached pages
where TargetLoader isn't in the bottom queue: it'll be loaded
as a separate request instead, which is suboptimal but no
worse that what we were doing before.
Right now TargetLoader is small enough that it could also be in
the top queue, but in the future we want to add things like
the action=visualeditor API request to it, and mw.Api is
relatively big.
Note: this also makes a breaking change to the plugin API:
plugin callbacks no longer receive the target instance
as a parameter, as they're now executed before the target
has been constructed rather than after. In the long term,
if we want to give plugins access to the target instance,
we could give them the target promise somehow. For now,
I've killed this feature because nothing used it and
the change from a direct object reference to a promise
would have been a breaking change anyway.
Also fixed incorrect documentation index for ve.init.mw.ViewPageTarget.init.

The #tryWithPreparedCacheKey method was assuming that the request
could only fail because of invalid cache key. It can also fail because
of a bad token, and probably for a number of other reasons.
So only retry only once, and then fail. If it's a 'badtoken' error
during save, the caller will handle it and retry with a working token.
If it's something else, who knows, but we don't go into infinite loop
at least.

We used to attempt to not break Firefox's bfcache, but this
didn't really work very well, and it's not clear that avoiding
bfcache breakage is even a good idea. It's more sensible and
consistent to deliberately break bfcache while VE is active.
On top of that, the Firefox people believe that our trick
shouldn't even have worked to begin with:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1102664
Because the onbeforeunload handler is removed when VE
is deactivated, bfcache still works if you first click
Read, then navigate away.
Also clean up the management of the unload handler, using
addEventListener() and removing the return value fallback
code that is needed for beforeunload but not unload.
For beforeunload this is harder to clean up because
the addEventListener()-based API for returning a value
isn't consistent across browsers.

It's still very difficult to test whether this code works, but
doing $( newDoc ).remove( 'selector1' ).remove( 'selector2' )...
demonstrably doesn't work, because 1) the selector passed to remove()
filters the collection, it doesn't descend into it, and 2) remove()
returns the collection of removed items, so chaining it doesn't work.
Instead, use $( newDoc ).find( 'selector1, selector2, ...' ).remove();

We used to send data like { title: { missing: true|false } }
With this change, we send data like { missing: [titles], existing: true|[titles] }
where 'existing' is set to true (assume all non-missing titles exist)
for current revisions and to an array of existing titles for
old revisions.
This is because we always output this data for links in the current
revision, even when loading an old revision: in that case we rely
on the client to request the omitted information, so there we can't
assume that all pages we don't have information about exist.

This cleans up the selectors for the elements on the toolbar
so that they can be tested.
Class names in the form of ve-test-* are added to elements
that have words for labels: 'Paragraph', 'Cite', 'Insert'.
There is no other way to look up these elements in the DOM
except using the UI text, but it is different in different languages,
so this is unusable for the language_screenshots job,
which is multilingual by its nature.

MobileViewTarget.
Due to this being missed, pageName was getting set to a jQuery object,

jQuery to emit a TypeError: Illegal invocation.
I guess this needs a MobileFrontend commit as well. Don't think it fixes

Contrary to binding a reference, this-overiddes for inline
functions gets messy and fragile. There's also a minor
performance overhead that can be avoided. No separation of
concerns, eiter, as the object is held by the closure.
Also:
* Remove left-over instances of @method.
* Remove redundant '0' argument to setTimeout.
* Use null instead of $ for apply() on static methods like $.when.
* Use .empty().append() instead of .html(). Does the same but
without additional overhead and without confusion association
with "html" which isn't used (it doesn't serialise and re-parse
or clone, it just appends when given one or more nodes).

It's good that we're not trying to close the save dialog
if it's not open, but we still need to release our reference
to it in that case, otherwise trying to open the save dialog
in a new incarnation of the editor will fail.
If you opened VE, opened the save dialog, closed it,
went back to read mode, opened VE again, and tried to open the
save dialog again, it would fail because it tried to open
the cached reference to the previous editor's save dialog.
Bonus: prevent JS errors in this case by only attaching an
onClose handler if the dialog actually opened successfully.
If opening the dialog failed, the callback parameter isn't
a promise but an OO.ui.Error, and calling .always() causes
a JS error.

Both onDocumentKeyDown and onViewTabClick would check
this.activating and invoke deactivate() differently depending
on its value. That's ugly, so incorporate the "don't show a dialog
if deactivating during activation" logic into deactivate() itself.
Rename the override parameter to noDialog, and fix the broken
logic around it (it overrode too much).
Also move setting this.activating = false; out of these event
handlers into cancel(), where it clearly belongs because
activatingDeferred is being rejected there.

Move ve.track() subscriber to its own file, and have it
route mwtiming.* events (for TimingData) and mwedit.* events
(for Edit schema) differently. Most of the data population
lives in the subscriber, so actual ve.track() calls are
pretty lightweight.
Existing ve.track() calls with timing data were kept with
their names intact for backwards compatibility, but
we may eventually want to throw them out and start from scratch.

* Track init and ready events
* Remove old ve.track( 'Edit', ... ) crap that didn't work
ve.init.mw.ViewPageTarget.js:

loads rather than after
* Remove unnecessary this.events.trackSaveError() calls:
TargetEvents already listens to these events itself
* Remove badtoken handler because all it was was an
unnecessary trackSaveError() call
* Add abort tracking
** Pass trackMechanism through deactivate() and cancel()
ve.init.mw.Target.js:
* Add static.integrationType to populate the 'integration'
field in the schema
ve.init.mw.TargetEvents.js:

When you clicked the Back button in the browser, the URL
in the address bar would change (removing veaction=edit),
but we would not go back to read mode. This was broken
by 5c0c11753 almost a month ago but apparently no one noticed.
This is because 5c0c11753 moved the pushState() calls to
be earlier (in init init), making the replaceState() call
in the ViewPageTarget constructor (which is there
specifically for this bug) run too late in those cases.
The simplest way to fix this is to duplicate these replaceState()
calls before the pushState() calls in init init.
I feel a bit bad about copying code, but not very bad
because the code I'm copying already has a FIXME comment
about how there should be a better way :P

If there is more than one span in #firstHeading, we only want to
update the first one.
This will still break if something inserts elements *before* the title
span, but fixing that would take more thought (we probably should
rebuild the entire heading element and fire 'wikipage.content' on it).

It's unnecessary, big and ugly, way too close to an actually useful button, and
adds oodles of complexity to the mire that is VPT without significant user benefit
whilst taking up an unjustifiably huge amount of the already-over-burdened space.
This means that the minimum browser width for English on default Vector to show
the toolbar correctly is now 945px, down from 1029px.
Bonuses: fix MWCancelConfirmDialog's cancel button to be destructive (it is) and
remove a now-recently-fixed comment asking for the save button to be styled using
a generic class (provided by the constructive flag).
Change-Id: I30dc7020121f0dd6907b61ef674a7cb14eb00652
Closing a dialog with specific data means closing it again with
potentially different data, while the dialog is already closing, means
someone wins and someone looses. Silently failing in this case is bad,
because if the first close call was a cancel, producing no side effects,
but the second close call would have produced some side effect, the side
effect would never occur.
The problem here really was that the save dialog needs to be closed
before we can destroy the surface so we can uphold the assumption that
hold and teardown processes are operating on an attached DOM.
The solution is to automatically close the save dialog on teardown,
rather than on save. Since save triggers teardown, this has and identical
user experience.

We weren't unbinding these handlers at all, and so the 'ok' or 'cancel'
handlers could run multiple times for one button click, and even worse,
you could get in a situation where clicking 'ok' in one confirm dialog
would also run the 'ok' handler for the other one. This happens because
the ConfirmDialog instance is recycled by the WindowSet.
The way the unbinding is done is ugly; we should either consolidate the
'ok' and 'cancel' events so we can use .once(), or come up with some other
way to automatically unbind the handlers.

Change-Id: Ica9e5a92841fec003ce4a21d740a9bc6ff3da9c7
We don't have a FOUC on the appearing of the 'edit' link. That
one is handled quite intelligently:
* Via the stylesheet that is also loaded in noscript mode, its
(hidden) appearance is already predetermined. So as soon as
those elements are seen by the browser they style correctly
for users without JavaScript (display: none).
* This same stylesheet also hides it for users with JavaScript
but where VE is not available (e.g. due to browser support).
While ve-not-available is added very early on (before
document ready), it could in theory cause a short FOUC, but
that's okay. We simply don't know that VE isn't supported
until then. We optimise for the common case (JavaScript
enabled, VE available), while still ensuring that it is
always hidden in noscript, and is hidden as soon as possible
when VE turns out not to be available.
For some reason, one small detail (the little bit of whitespace
added inside the brackets), was left out of this and was
implemented by adding the class 'mw-editsection-expanded' to them
from a document ready handler.
* First step, get rid of the script that adds this class and
use ve-available instead. That means they're styled
correctly much earlier (we add the class to <html> before
document ready). This can still cause a brief FOUC, though
in most cases they're correct from the start.
* Step two, make brackets expand by default for script users,
and let ve-not-available reset it. This way, like with edit tabs,
a FOUC will never happen for ve-available. And even for
ve-not-available, a FOUC is rare since we add it before
document ready via <html> look-ahead styling.
There was still a brief reflow jump because of negative margins
between two paint events. One was undoing the other at a later
time. These negative margins are a remnant of when we were doing
animations (follows-up I4b9c47fd65a70). They were added to reduce
reflows and content shift, but were now actually causing them.
Removed "padding-right" from mw-editsection, and negative margin
from the brackets.
Also:
* Don't add inline 'style="direction: ltr;"' on every single
editsection throughout the DOM. This was the only operation we
were doing unconditionally. While I doubt the need of it in
general, we can at least allow MediaWiki to do it right, and
only add the override if needed. This saves quite a few DOM
operations.
Change-Id: I7a729edc2cd4a66ebc0ad6935ffd02cb9b948bff
There was a slideDown() call, but this didn't do anything since
toolbars are visible and in the DOM by default.
As a temporary hack, hide it synchronously after creation and
then do the slideDown still.
This could ever so briefly cause a flash, though that didn't
happen in my testing.
This makes the experience smoother when we initialise the surface.
In particular the moment where we swap #bodyContent for our Surface
(which should look visually almost identical), before this change
it was still a bit of a flash since the Surface version has a
toolbar on top, and thus instead of swapping smoothly, we hide
content and show a similar piece of content that has an incompatible
offset from the top.

Update VE core submodule to master (109a3cf):
* 109a3cf ve.ce.Surface: Remove font-size: 1em;
Follows-up I5818dce6265.
* When applied to ve-ui-surface, it applies to both of its children,
namely ve-ce-surface and ve-ui-surface-overlay. The latter
(containing things like context menu and inspectors) should not
inherit styles intended for rendering of wikipage content by
the skin.
* Move mw-content-{ltr,rtl} from an outer parent to a slightly
deeper parent of the actual content. It's now on documentNode.
Still high enough to apply to all content. This was to ensure
it remains a child of mw-body-content, like in MediaWiki core.
* Updated padding/margin hack again. Since now the font-size
applies on the surface, this once again means that now 1em
on the surface != 1em on the documentNode, so we need the
calculation again. Brought it back and this time documented
what it is based on.

but that method only exists in ViewPageTarget. Instead, call .save()
again.
Also pass the HTMLDocument and the save options around to the success

Protocol-relative <base> tags are fine when the iframe trick is used
because the iframe inherits a default base URL from the parent document,
so if the <base> is relative it can be resolved against that. However,
a document created with DOMParser (or document.implementation, oops!)
won't inherit anything, so anything other than a fully absolute <base>
will just break.
To make Parsoid's relative <base> work anyway, resolve it in the
context of the main document, then write the resolved version
back into the <base> tag.

Objectives:
* Allow users on-wiki to create tools and dialogs for citation templates
of their choosing
* Allow editing of citation templates directly, without having to go
through the reference dialog
* Provide citation template tools within reference editing that use the
same titles and icons as the citation tools do, but don't wrap the
inserted content in a ref tag
Changes:
* Reference list was cloning the DOM element it was inserting into its
view before the generated content node could finish rendering, so it
never ended up showing the finished rendering in the reference list
* Documenting hack about use of reference list node's destroy method,
and how we are depending on destroy not canceling generated content
rendering
* Introduced reference model
* Added saving/updating method to transclusion model
* Added getPartsList method to dm transclusion node, which caches the
result and invalidates the cache on update
* Added citation dialog, which extends transclusion dialog
* Added cite group to toolbars, cite-template in reference dialog toolbar
* Factored out getting the node to edit and saving changes procedures in
transclusion dialog so they could be extended in citation dialog
* Updated uses of autoAdd as per changes in oojs-ui (Ic353f91)
* Renamed MWDialogTool file since there was only one tool in it
* Expanded TransclusionDialogTool file out since there is now more logic
to it
* Switched to using ve.dm.MWReferenceModel instead of plain objects in
reference search widget
Configuration:
If you add to MediaWiki:Visualeditor-cite-tool-definition.json the
following code you will magically be presented with a delightful array
of citation options:
[
{ "name": "web", "icon": "ref-cite-web", "template": "Cite web" },
{ "name": "book", "icon": "ref-cite-book", "template": "Cite book" },
{ "name": "news", "icon": "ref-cite-news", "template": "Cite news" },
{ "name": "journal", "icon": "ref-cite-journal", "template": "Cite journal" }
]
...or...
[
{
"name": "any-name",
"icon": "any-ooui-icon",
"template": "Any template",
"title": "Any title text"
}
]
The title text is derived either from the title property or from the name
property by pre-pending the string 'visualeditor-cite-tool-name-' to
generate a message key. Titles for 'web', 'book', 'news' and 'journal' are
provided. The icon is a normal oo-ui-icon name, and more icons can be
added, as usual, by adding a class called .oo-ui-icon-{icon name} to
MediaWiki:Common.css. 'ref-cite-web', 'ref-cite-book', 'ref-cite-news'
and 'ref-cite-journal' are provided. The template name is simply the name
of the template without its namespace prefix.

TOC Widget is created in the mw target view class.
Adding and removing a heading rebuilds the TOC Widget based
on the the order of the page heading nodes.
TOC Widget considers TOC page settings and displays in the default manor
unless forced or disabled.
TOC Widget still needs to be finalized by being placed in the surface.
This could be a problem until we have a CE node for it to live in or
have some DM work added. Roan and I have discussed how to go forward.
To enable the widget you must add the following to LocalSettings.php:

This allows us to filter out popstate events triggered by the

The switch to source mode code path was causing onSerializeComplete to
be called, which accesses this.saveDialog because it assumes it's being
called from onSaveDialogReview.
In fact, onSaveDialogReview was calling it twice, once as the callback
it passes to serialize() and once in response to the serializeComplete
event. Cleaned this up by renaming the function and removing the
event binding, so it's now only called once and only for reviewing
changes to new pages, not in the switch to source mode code path.

There are several conditions to defaultSize behavior of thumbnails and
frameless images and other images when it comes to default size. In the
same principle is 'border' which is not quite a type despite the fact
it 'behaves' as such in wikitext (and has a unique identifier that comes
instead of the other types.
This commit aims to organize this behavior for the user in an
understandable manner.
* Add 'basic' image type for images that have no specified type ('none')
* Handle the difference in 'default' size behavior between basic images
and thumbnails/frameless. The thumb/frameless images have the default
wiki size. Other images' default size is their original dimensions.
* Force wiki-configured default size for thumbnails and frameless images
in the DM. This is done because at the moment Parsoid's output is of
Wikipedia's default size rather than the local wiki's. The size is
adapted if needed, directly in the DM.
* Added 'border' as a pseudo-type checkbox flag that sets css class
'mw-image-border' is for parsoid rendering on save.
* Add 'make full size' to the size widget select and treat it as a faux
default button for basic and frame images.

Move target.surface from mw.Target to Target

Move target.$document from mw.ViewPageTarget to Target
* It was initialised with null in mw.ViewPageTarget, but the
assignment happened in mw.Target. So it should be moved up
at least to mw.Target.
* Since it is useful to have in sa.Target as well, moved it up
to the abstract Target, and implemented in sa.Target and
immediately used in the standalone demo where we were already
duplicating the find( '.ve-ce-documentNode' ).
Add missing target.setupDone = false; in sa.Target
Add missing target.toolbar to Target
* Was used in all subclasses, but never initialised in any of
the constructors. Let's standardise this property name as well
(instead of initialising it in three places).
Move target#event-surfaceReady from mw.Target to Target
* sa.Target uses it as well, and considering Platform#initialize
is already standardised in the abstract class, Target#setup
being deferred is most likely to happen in each target as well
so let's avoid different events being invented for the same
thing and consistently use 'surfaceReady'.

Follows-up I55ef2622c9eacc which activated code introduced in
mw.Target in commits before that one that caused a change in the
execution order.
Hiding of page content (regular wiki page content provided by
original view request) must happen before the surface document is
focussed.
We used to hide the content from mw.ViewPageTarget#setUpSurface,
which is called from #onReady, which focusses the document after
setUpSurface is done.
Most of this code was moved to mw.ViewPageTarget#onSurfaceReady
which is the listener for the surfaceReady event emitted from
If our surface document gets focus while the original wikipage
content container is still there, the view port is forced to
scroll down because our surface is the next element sibling after
the wikipage container in the DOM.
And browsers (apparently Chrome is not affected) naturally retain
scroll position even if the elements above the one you "scrolled to"
disappear.
We can't (and shouldn't) move the hidePageContent call because
that's the responsibility of the Target subclass, so instead
moved the document focus to below the hidePageContent which is
now also part of the responsibility of the Target subclass.
Also:
* Removed target.surfaceOptions reference because that property
does not exist. We never passed a second argument here, and
whatever this was intended for, doesn't exist.

* Added imetests (which contain unformatted JSON) to ignore.
* In ve.dm.ModelRegistry#matchTypeRegExps, removed redundant
!! cast from the [+!!withFunc] statement which was hitting
a bug in node-jscs. All callers to this local private function
pass a literal boolean true/false so no need to cast it.
* Removed "/* key .. , value */" from ve.setProp, though this
wasn't caught by node-jscs, found it when searching for " , ".
* Made npm.devDependencies fixed instead of using tilde-ranges.
This too often leads to strange bugs or sudden changes. Fixed
them at the version they were currently ranging to.

Following on from getDomFromModel, this returns a document model
instead of element linear data. The only instance that hasn't been
replaced is in rich paste, where we need to sanitize the converted
data before constructing the document model.
This should be cleaned up in a later commit.

Currently it takes 4 arguments which are all properties
of the document model, so just pass the model instead and
access the properties later. Rename to getDomFromModel.

Move generation of initial edit summary from setupSaveDialog() to
restoreEditSection().
This allows us to get rid of the properties tracking whether both

to work correctly.

Add prepareCacheKey() which submits HTML for serialization and saves
the resulting cache key, and tryWithPreparedCacheKey() which uses that
cache key (if available; if pending, it waits for it) for API requests.
Implemented save(), serialize() and showChanges() in terms of
tryWithPreparedCacheKey().
When opening the save dialog, run the conversion, cache it, and fire
off a prepareCacheKey(). Then use the cached conversion for save/diff/
serialize. This means we don't convert multiple times, and it causes
the prepared wikitext to be used.

Beta Feature. For now, all of them are commented out except for formulæ editing
(mwmath). The "experimental" Beta Feature bucket is no more, but the preference
remains so that it can be set to both true and hidden on MediaWiki.org to let
all the different experimental flags.
The feature icons, previous mis-named "logo" and mis-identified as "screenshots"
are now renamed. One for the mwmath Beta Feature has been added (the rest need
creating before those can be enabled). The i18n descriptions now each identify
that the feature is an experimental one, and that caution is needed.

Binding ve.init.mw.Target#onLoad and the anonymous function which calls ve#track
with timing data to the resolution of the same deferred makes the timing
measurement sensitive to how long it takes ve.init.mw.Target#onLoad to yield,
which in turns depends on whether the requisite ResourceLoader modules for
setting up the editing surface are ready. This muddles the definition of what
we're actually measuring, making it dependent on a race condition.
This patch moves the tracking call to a filter function through which the jqXHR
deferred is threaded. This ensures that the 'duration' datapoint on the domSave
and domLoad events captures just the time spent talking with the API.

Instead, listen to 'select', or to 'transact' on the dm.Document.
This commit only fixes uses outside of the dm/ce.Surface ecosystem.
ce.Surface still listens to 'change'.
ve.init.mw.ViewPageTarget.js:
* Rename onSurfaceModelTransact to clearSaveDialogDiff and bind it to
the document's transact event instead
* Rename onSurfaceModelChange to checkForWikitextWarning and bind it
to the surface's transact event. This is needed because the function
inspects the surface's selection, which isn't yet in a consistent
state when the document's transact event fires
ve.ui.MWReferenceDialog.js:
* Rename onSurfaceChange to onDocumentTransact and rebind accordingly
ve.ce.ProtectedNode.js:
* Get rid of onSurfaceModelChange
* Instead, bind positionPhantoms to the document's transact event
directly, and only bind it while phantoms are visible
ve.ui.Context.js:
* Rename onChange to onModelSelect and rebind accordingly
* Rename afterChange to afterModelSelect
* Drop check for undefined selection, no longer needed now that we're
listening to a finer-grained event
ve.ce.Surface.test.js:
* Listen to 'select' instead of 'change'

Previously we returned ElementLinearData from the converter, then
stripped out the MetaLinearData. This meant that before processing
the ElementLinearData from the converter actually contained metadata
which is confusing.
The new document constructor stores the converter results in a
FlatLinearData object and simultaneously populates element and meta
data stores.
Also in this commit I have moved various methods from ElementLinearData
to FlatLinearData, from which ElementLinearData inherits.

Objective:
* Use the MW link specifically, since the target/command system doesn't
understand the group/id/extension concept yet

Objectives:
* Make it possible to add items to toolbars without having to have all
toolbars know about the items in advance
* Make it possible to specialize an existing tool and have it be used
instead of the base implementation
Approach:
* Tools are named using a path-style category/id/ext system, making them
selectable, the latter component being used to differentiate extended
tools from their base classes, but is ignored during selection
* Toolbars have ToolGroups, which include or exclude tools by category or
category/id, and order them by promoting and demoting selections of
tools by category or category/id
Future:
* Add a way to place available but not yet placed tools in an "overflow"
group
* Add a mode to ToolGroup to make the tools a multi-column drop-down style
list with labels so tools with less obvious icons are easier to identify
- and probably use this as the overflow group

This patch rounds off change I29740fa7a by replacing calls to EventLogging's
eventLog.logEvent with calls to VisualEditor's ve.track. ve.track publishes
events by providing an interface, ve.trackRegisterHandler, which event handlers
use to subscribe to VisualEditor events. By making it the responsibility of the
web analytics framework to register itself as a handler, VisualEditor can
remain decoupled from (and indeed ignorant of) any particular event logging
implementation. This allows VisualEditor to be integrated with many different
web analytics platforms with nothing more than a bit of glue code for mapping
ve's event semantics to those of the target platform.
The practical difference that this makes is that it frees VisualEditor from
having to know about EventLogging or from having to load EventLogging
components, which means we can remove quite a lot of gnarly code. My current
plan is to migrate the code for registering and loading the 'Edit'
schema module to Extension:CoreEvents, which is also where I'll commit the
handler for VE events. (CoreEvents exists precisely to provide an organized
place for persistent but WMF-particular instrumentation.)
Once this patch is merged and deployed, the following two configuration
variables may be removed from mediawiki-config:
- $wgVisualEditorEnableSplitTest
- $wgVisualEditorEnableEventLogging

Mostly as a demonstration of how easy this is with MWExtensionNode.
The icon was chosen with the following criteria:
1. Recognisable (the ankh is quite common in popular culture, right?)
2. Doesn't look idiotic to academics (I've consulted an Egyptology
PhD and they can confirm it's not the glyph for penis)
3. Renders well at <16x16
That said it does look a little like a stick man...

The JS logic (which continues to exist to take care of pages

with a different configuration in the future) didn't do this yet
causing the "Edit source" tab to inconsistently appear on pages

* Generate the edit tabs and the section edit links in PHP, with a
fallback in JS for cases where we don't have them yet due to
caching. But only change things if VE is enabled, and have the JS
correct the state if the wrong cached HTML comes through.
* Make the order of the tabs/links and the messages to use as captions
configurable
* Make the edit tabs and section edit links always be present in the
page (regardless of namespace, user prefs, etc.) but be hidden and
have JS unhide them (using html.ve-available) if appropriate
* Add appendix messages so we can do a superscript "beta" even in places
where we can't use HTML in the message

* Add config vars for link captions, with null causing us to use
the default caption
* Add config vars for link caption appendices. Too many config vars
but we'll clean that up later
VisualEditor.hooks.php:
* Dynamically add tab messages to the init init module
* Remove unused globals in onBeforePageDisplay()
* Add noscript CSS module
* Add a SkinTemplateNavigation hook that changes and reorders the edit
tabs as appropriate
* Add a DoEditSectionLink hook that overwrites the edit section links
* Export the new config variables to JS
VisualEditor.i18n.php:
* Add beta appendix message
* Add a message for the default VE edit section link
ve.init.mw.ViewPageTarget.init.css:
* Remove the animation on the edit section links
* Darken the color of the brackets and the pipe from #ccc to #555
* Style the beta message to be superscript-like (but not real <sup> to
avoid moving the baseline)
ve.init.mw.ViewPageTarget.noscript.css:
* Hide the VE edit tab, the pipe and the VE edit section link initally
unless and until JS unhides
ve.init.mw.ViewPageTarget.init.js:
* Toggle .ve-not-available / .ve-available
* Edit tabs
** Only generate the the edit tabs if they're not already there from PHP
** Rewrite the edit tab generation to mirror what's being done in PHP
* Section edit links
** Same as for edit tabs
** Also add mw-visualeditor-expanded to pad the brackets

Added wgIsArticle to isViewPage checks, otherwise we were attempting
to load VE dynamically on Special:Move/Delete, which resulted in a
broken h1 title and odd behavior off the 'Read' tab.
Also added !wgIsArticle to pageExists. This is a bit of a hack because
we don't have any info on page existence in the JS on these pages
(I think?). But it's better to display 'Edit' for a page that doesn't
exist, than 'Create' for a page that does.

Though this is already handled by Ie50b63ba5064e85d26 for the
server-side, and that should automatically reflect to the
client-side. Since we're dealing with cache conditions in
wmf-production where the user.options manifest does not yet
contain an entry for these relatively new preferences, lets
transfer the default value here as well. This does not affect
logged-in users (since their user options are always up-to-date
and embedded in the page).
Also made ve.support.es5 be casted to boolean. Previously it
would be a reference to JSON.stringify (if supported), or the
bottom value of whichever feature the browser didn't support.
Doesn't change any behaviour but should make things slightly
more performant when this value is evaluated.

On browsers that implement the Navigation Timing API, performance.now()
provides values with microsecond precision that are guaranteed to be monotonic
(i.e., they are not subject to skew due to changes to the system clock).
This patch adds a `ve.now` utility function that will use this API when it is
available and fall back gracefully to `Date.now` when it is not.

In target#setUpSurface, both target#setUpToolbar and
target.surface#initialize are called. #setUpToolbar does an
asynchronous animation.
After that animation is completed we call target.toolbar.initialize
and target.surface.context.update.
Right now ce.ProtectedNode needs to update the position of its
shields when the CE Surface changes position (which it does when
the UI Surface changes position because of the UI Toolbar changing
position), and does so by listening to toolbarPosition.
Adding this event to allow it to listen to that instead.

== Renamed methods ==
* enableFloating -> enableFloatable
* disableFloating -> disableFloatable
* setPosition -> float
* resetPosition -> unfloat
== Scroll and resize event ==
Timeline for scroll event reduced from about half a dozen
"Recalculate style" and various forced "Paint" down to 0.
New timeline for scroll is clean (for me: from ~35 to ~59 fps):
* 1 Event (scroll)
* 1 Composite Layer
The composite layer action is the browser changing the viewport
to a different portion of the document drawing. Exactly the one
thing a simple scroll should do.
Timeline for resize event is still pretty crowded and low fps,
but it has improved. Further improvement would likely be around
using requestAnimation and going outside ve.ui.Toolbar.
== Changes ==
* New: ve.ui.Toolbar#initialize.
Similar to what surface has. Users of Toolbar should decide
whether to call enableFloatable, append it to the DOM at some
point and then call initialize() once.
* Don't compute offset() every time.
Eliminated by doing it once in #initialize. These 'top' and
'left' offsets do not change.
* Don't compute outerWidth() and $window.width() every time.
Reduced by doing it once in #initialize to compute the 'right'
offset. Updating it only on resize.
* Don't set 'top' every time.
This is already in the stylesheet. It was never set to anything
else so the abstraction for it in #float has been removed.
This also made it obvious that code for "ve-ui-toolbar-bottom"
was unused and left behind. Tha class was only ever being
removed from something (never added).
The one addClass call for it was in a condition that is always
false ("if top > 0").
* Don't set 'left' every time.
Eliminated by doing it once in #float.
* Don't set 'right' every time.
Reduced by no longer doing it on scroll. Done once in #float,
and on resize after computing the new value for it.
* Remove no-op style operations.
Wrapped methods in if-floatable, if-floated etc. to reduce a
fair amount of easily avoided re-paint overhead.
* Avoid double re-paint in mw.ViewPageTarget.
Though we prevent a lot of redundant re-paints now, whenever
we do repaint we want to do it in 1 repaint instead of 2.
ve.ui.Toolbar emits #toolbarPosition, which tells
mw.ViewPageTarget to update toolbarTracker which would read
the new $bar style properties and copy them over to the
$toolbarTracker. However, this read operation forces the browser
to do an immediate re-paint half-way just for $bar.
Browsers only repaint when style properties are changed and
JS has yielded. The exception to this is JS reading style
properties: in that case the browser is forced to do those
deferred repaints directly and reflect the new values.
We can avoid this double repaint by passing the updated values
as data instead of requiring the receiver to read the DOM (and
thus a keep the deferred repaint). Now toolbarTracker can use
them directly whilst the browser hasn't even repainted $bar yet.
== Clean up ==
* Redundant "border-radius: 0". This would reset something, but
it never does. None of the things it inherits from set a
border-radius. There is one subclass where toolbar is used
with a border-radius (".ve-ui-surfaceWidget .ve-ui-toolbar-bar"
sets a border-radius) which overrides this on purpose, so the
default of 0 is redundant.
* Pattern "if ( .. ) addClass() else removeClass()" changed to:
"toggleClass( , .. )"

Previously, we'd clone the data but convert it in the context of
the existing dm.Document, whose nodes had pointers to elements in the
old data array, not to the cloned ones. Because dm.MWReferenceNode
has logic like if ( something === dataElement ), this caused the sanity
check conversion to behave slightly differently compared to the real
conversion that happens on save, and so a references corruption
bug went unnoticed.

Server-side, plugins can register themselves by adding to
$wgVisualEditorPluginModules. This is the recommended way for
MW extensions to extend VE. Client-side, plugins can register
themselves through mw.libs.ve.addPlugin(), which takes a string
(RL module name) or a callback.
When VisualEditor loads, we load the registered plugin modules in
parallel with ext.visualEditor.core. Note that they're loaded in
parallel, not after, and so the plugins should explicitly depend
on ext.visualEditor.core if they use or extend classes in VE core.
Once the modules finish loading and user and site scripts have run,
we execute the registered plugin callbacks. These callbacks can
optionally return a promise. We gather these promises and wait for
all of them to be resolved, then initialize the editor.
This allows Gadgets to extend VE by top-loading a small module that
depends on ext.visualEditor.viewPageTarget.init and calls
mw.libs.ve.addPlugin( 'ext.gadget.bottomHalfGadget' ); , the bottom
half being a hidden Gadget that depends on ext.visualEditor.core and
contains the actual code. The addPlugin() call needs to be in a
top-loading module because otherwise there's no guarantee that the
plugin will be registered before the user clicks edit and VE loads.
User and site scripts can extend VE by simply calling addPlugin()
directly, as mw.libs.ve is already present when user scripts run (since
it's top-loaded) and VE waits for 'user' and 'site' to run before
executing plugins.
If user/site scripts need to load additional JS files, they can load
these with $.getScript() and return the corresponding promise:
mw.libs.ve.addPlugin( function() { return $.getScript( 'URL' ); } );
For a diagram of all this, see
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/File:VE-plugin-infrastructure.jpg :)
VisualEditor.php:
* Add $wgVisualEditorPluginModules
VisualEditor.hooks.php:
* Expose $wgVisualEditorPluginModules in JS
ve.init.mw.ViewPageTarget.init.js:
* Add mw.libs.ve.addPlugin function that just stores the registered

being initialized
ve.init.mw.Target.js:
* Add $wgVisualEditorPluginModules to the set of modules to load when
initializing VE
* Add a Deferred (this.modulesReady) to track module loading
* Add addPlugin() and addPlugins() methods that add to either
this.modules or this.pluginCallbacks
* In load(), instead of mw.loader.load()ing this.modules, use using()
to load this.modules plus user and site, and fire onModulesReady()
when they're loaded
* In onModulesReady(), execute the registered callbacks, gather the
returned promises, wait for all of them to be resolved, then resolve
this.modulesReady
* Fire onReady based on this.modulesReady being resolved, rather than
using a second using() call

problems with the new conditions not being rolled-out quickly
for anonymous users because the load queue is in the HTML

This also allows us to fix above problem retroactively in wmf

already in the cached load queue (temporarily, until the cache
has rolled over).
